War over Oude IJsselstreek: Netterden

May 1943. Lancaster ED 778 DX from Scampton had 7 aircrew onboard. Five have been found, two survived the crash thanks to their parachutes.

One immediately was arrested and taken hostage (prisoner of war). The other one was able to escape, because the German occupier was tricked by a smart municipal. He filled one coffin with sand and debris. Thus it seemed all aircrew were known. Four Canadians and an Englishmen lose their young lives and are buried at the Roman Catholic Cemetery in Gendringen.
